Air Raid Shelters, Decimals and Library Visits!

This week, 6D went to work with Miss Coope on constructing air raid shelters out of dowel, cardboard, tape and glue. We also learned about triangle structures and why these are the the strongest forms to work with.

The structures will be tested next week by dropping weights from the same height. Inside the structures will be an egg! This could get messy!

In Maths, we explored decimals and percentages in more detail and went around the class in groups solving a variety of word-based problems. Although there was no Maths homework worksheet set on Monday this week, there are videos and a quiz to be completed over the weekend.

We enjoyed our visit to the library today. Special shout out to Alex and Zein for being our Learners of the Week!

Kandinsky Prints Begin!

This week, we began our art afternoons and created the 3D surfaces to print with next week. We also expressed our emotions in art form while listening to Schubert. These pieces then inspired our 3D works.

We also continued exploring fractions, decimals and percentages. Next week, we will continue to practice how to convert all three forms. A big well done to the class and their resilience this week!

On Google Classroom there is a video and some quizzes for each student to complete before Monday.

A busy start to the term!

This week has certainly been a busy start to the term. We have been working on converting fractions to decimals in Maths; begun our non-fiction letter unit in Writing; explored Hitler’s rise to power in history; and developed our understanding of Abraham’s story in R.E.. Additionally, four members of our form have visited the Houses of Parliament and been baking in Rishi Sunak’s kitchen (we can’t wait to hear all about it)!

A special shout out to our Learners of the Week for showing dedication in their relationships and resilience this week. Next week we will be delving deeper into our synaesthesia/ Kandinsky Art projects! Exciting!

Church Service

Today we gathered at St John’s Church to sing some carols and share the story of advent. The students were absolutely fantastic and a special shout out to those who performed readings. Among the songs performed were: Feliz Navidad, Calypso Carol and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Feliz Navidad was… Perhaps… Our favourite!).

Still-Life Sketching

This week in art, we have been exploring still-life sketching using a small range of world-war 2-related objects. We begun focusing on simple sketch lines – curving them at certain angles to produce a rounded effect. We then moved on to developing our cross-hatching to build up both texture and depth of colour on each sketch.

Fractions, fractions and more fractions!

This week we have been exploring how to work with fractions in more detail, particularly focusing on equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. We also had the pleasure of virtually meeting Emma Caroll – the author of our class novel ‘To the Lighthouse’ – and got to ask a range of questions regarding life as an author…

This lead on nicely to our drama project this week, in which we all took turns reading different roles for the World War Two play ‘Bombs and Blackberries’ (a special shout out to Lucas, Jeffery, Maddie and Harrison for their impressive acting skills!).

The week ended with preparations for our book buddies night, our ‘flashback’ hot write plan and some quick Christmas decorating!

Brian Iddon Pilot visit and Moor Allerton Library trip

This week has been busy with various visitors and visits! On Tuesday, 30 pupils from Year 6 visited Moor Allerton Library to construct fantasy creatures out of recycled milk bottles. There were some fantastic creations, including replicas of animals in Fantastic Beasts!

We also had the pleasure of Brian Iddon (Mrs Cooper’s dad) coming to visit! He provided us with a breadth of information about fighter pilots and German bomber pilots! Lucky members of the class even got to dress up in pilot uniform (fighter pilot helmet included)!

Anti-Bullying Week

This week we have focused on what bullying means and how we can appropriately respond whether we are the ‘rock’ (bystander), ‘scissors’ (bully) or ‘paper’ (victim). We also reminded ourselves how we can be an ‘upstander’ in these tricky situations. To draw attention and raise awareness about anti-bullying week, we created some fantastic posters and participated in an anti-bullying march. We also wore odd socks on Friday and attended two assemblies about the significance of bullying.
